Q001: Which system requirements does OCR-Dial need?
OCR-Dial needs a TAPI-Treiber on your computer.

QT002: What is TAPI?
TAPI is a telephony interface defined from Microsoft by which TAPI-capable applications can control phone calls. The TAPI interface hands over the TAPI commands of the application to a TAPI driver which sends this to the phone or PBX.

QT003: How to get a TAPI driver?
TAPI drivers are always bound to a PBX or a phone. If the manufacturer of your phone hardware offers a TAPI driver, this should be contained on the installation-CD or should be available for download on their homepage.

QT004: How do I instal my TAPI driver?
The TAPI driver should provide a setup. This setup is to be executed and afterwards it is recommended to re-boot the system. The TAPI driver will be shown unter [Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Advanced].

QT005: What happens on TAPI application start?
  1. The applications initializes the TAPI interface. In the background all TAPI drivers known in the system are loaded and asked how many TAPI lines they support. The total number of available TAPI lines is returned to the application.
    • It can be that the initialization of your TAPI driver failed and therefore its TAPI lines are not shown.
    • The applications which support only TAPI call setup, initialize the TAPI, perhaps, only when required (e.g., Outlook).
    • The applications which also signalise incoming phone calls initialize the TAPI by start.
  2. The application detects the properties of her TAPI line.
    • ID 0 is the first line of the first successfully initialized TAPI driver. ID 3 can be the first line of the second TAPI driver, if the first driver offers three lines (ID 0,1,2).
    • If the line name is visible in the application, this step was successful.
  3. The application opens the TAPI line.
    • If successfull, the dial functions should be available now.
    • If the line could not be opened, a general error message with LINEERR_OPERATIONFAILED or 0x80000048 mostly appears.

QT006: How do I test my TAPI driver?
  1. For testing you can use the phone.exe TAPI tool.
    http://www.itecsoft.de/download/phone.zip
  2. Extract the ZIP archive.
  3. Run phone.exe.
  4. In the choice field "Device" all available TAPI lines are visible.
  5. Select your TAPI line.
  6. Click o [Start Session] to open the line.
    1. If successfull, the button should switch to [End Session] and the [Configure] button is enabled.
    2. If the line could not be opened, an error message is given in the lower status line, e.g. "(0x80000048) Operation Failed". This can have different causes:
      • The TAPI driver or the telephony hardware is not configured properly.
      • The communication with the telephony hardware is disturbed (serial interface, USB, LAN - according to driver).
  7. Test lineMakeCall:
    1. Enter a phone number in the input field "Phone #" and click on [Make Call]. If first your phone rings, please offhook the receiver. Now your telephone should call the destination number.
    2. Within the frame "Calls" information about the current connection should be signalised.
    3. If nothing happens, a error should be given in the status line.
    4. You can finish the call with the button [Hang Up].
  8. Test incoming calls:
    1. Call your telephone with you mobile.
    2. Within the frame "Calls" information about the incoming call should be signalised.
    3. If your TAPI drivers supports lineAswer, the button [Answer] should be enabled.
  9. Test line configuration:
    1. Click the button [Configure].
    2. Now the TAPI driver's line configuration dialog should be displayed.
    3. If no dialog appears, the following reasons are possible:
      • The driver has no line configuration.
      • The TAPI driver is 64 bit and the application is 32 bit.
      • The TAPI driver has a problem.

QT007: The TAPI does not work any more - what can I do?
  1. Please check if the TAPI driver is visible under [System Control > Phone and Modem Options > Advanced].
=> If the driver is not to visible, please install it again.
  2. Check the connection between TAPI driver and phone hardware; (serial interface, USB cable, LAN - according to driver).
  3. Check the driver configuration via [System Control > Phone and Modem Options > Advanced > Configure...].
  4. Re-boot your computer.
  5. Restart, perhaps, your PBX. Ask in the case of doubt your administrator.
  6. Restart your phone (unplug all cables depart and connect again).
  7. Check the line configuration with phone.exe - see point QT006 9.
